The other day I was overwhelmed by everything I had to do. My mind was in overdrive. I had work to finish. Things I needed to figure out. And, for reasons that seemed very important at the time, I was concerned that my latest YouTube video had only gotten 19 views. So I sat down on the couch to mentally chew over every last detail. Then my dog, Dreidel, jumped up next to me and put her head in my lap. And suddenly, I wasn't thinking about any of it. I was completely absorbed in the softness of her furry ear resting against my knee. For a moment, my entire world was just me and Dreidel. And that was more than enough. I've been thinking a lot about moments like this. How easily I can become absorbed in the world inside my head: evaluating what’s happening, worrying about what might happen, replaying what already happened. And how occasionally life interrupts. A dog puts her head in your lap. Your child starts laughing. You look up and notice the mountains. And for a moment, there’s nothing to figure out. You're just there. Strangely, this is what led me back to the story of Adam and Eve. Specifically, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. I started wondering if there was something in that story about the moment we began experiencing life through an almost continuous stream of evaluation: good and bad, right and wrong, enough and not enough.
