Code is cheap to change in year one and expensive in year three, and the difference is almost never in the code itself.
Adding a column to the users table takes about an hour in week two. In year three, the same change can take three weeks. The cost of change curve is going to bend regardless. How late it bends, and how gently, is the part you control.

The agents finished porting Campfire to Laravel and Django too. I'm sure there are optimizations that could be found there too, but the whole point is to get a sense of how frontier agents do with different environments out the box. github.com/basecamp/once-…
Codebases rot because decisions that were right for the team and the product at one point never get revisited once the team and the product change.
We usually blame the framework, the ORM or the previous team, and those are rarely the cause. Every rewrite I've watched start a bad project over from scratch ended up as a new bad project in the same framework.

📢 The first course Building Maintainable PHP Applications: Foundations is now live on @codysseydev
Over the years of working on startups, scale-ups and enterprise products, I've noticed that most codebases end up in the same place: hard to maintain, slow to change, painful to work with. It doesn't matter how successful the product is or which framework it's built on. Something about the way we think about code pulls projects toward the same fate.
This course is not about patterns, frameworks, or "clean code" rules. It's about the mindset that comes before any of that. It's the course I wish I had years ago, because most tutorials, books and academies focus on the basics or the short term, but very few talk about what happens to a codebase after year two, year three, year five.
More theory than code, and that's intentional. You need the "why" before the "how" is worth anything.

Can you upgrade Laravel project from Laravel 6 to Laravel 13?
I wanted to find out.
Instead of rewriting the application, I kept the database, business logic and frontend and worked through the compatibility issues.
But it worked.
