John D. Rockefeller Jr. kept a ledger as a boy. Not the oil empire kind, a small personal account book his father made him keep starting around age eight, where he tracked every penny earned, spent, and given away. Allowance in, expenses out, charitable donations recorded separately. His father reviewed it with him regularly.
That one habit, installed before the boy could have understood its significance, shaped how Junior thought about money, obligation, and stewardship for the rest of his life. He went on to fund the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg, build Rockefeller Center during the Depression to keep people employed, and donate the land for the United Nations headquarters. The ledger didn't make him generous. It gave him a framework early enough that generosity became a practice before it became a philosophy.
What strikes me about this is how ordinary the mechanism is. A notebook. Weekly review. A father paying attention. The Rockefellers get reduced to dynasty and spectacle, but the actual transmission of values happened in small, repeated, boring conversations about where the money went.
Frank Slootman walked into ServiceNow in 2011 and immediately started firing customers. Not because they were bad people, but because they were pulling the company in directions it couldn't afford to go. He writes in Amp It Up that most CEOs inherit a strategy shaped by whoever said yes the longest. His first move was to say no, loudly, and reset what the company was actually for.
That kind of clarity has a cost. People leave. Relationships get uncomfortable. The short-term numbers can look worse before they look better. But Slootman's point is that a company drifting across too many priorities isn't growing, it's just busy. Busy feels like progress until you realize you've spent three years building something you can't defend or describe in a single sentence.
I think about this with deals. The ones I've watched fall apart the fastest aren't the ones that were obviously bad. They're the ones where nobody wanted to draw the line early enough, where adding one more investor or one more use of proceeds seemed harmless each time. Sharpness is a form of respect, for your partners, your capital, your time, and for the people waiting at home who funded your ambition with their patience. Slootman calls it raising the tempo. I'd say it starts with being willing to disappoint someone today so you don't disappoint everyone later.
Andy Grove ran Intel's morning operations review the same way, every single day, no exceptions. Same time, same format, same questions. Not because he lacked imagination, but because he understood that a manager's output is the output of the teams he influences, and the only way to influence at scale is through repeatable process, not heroics.
He called it the "breakfast factory" model in High Output Management. A waiter who forgets your eggs creates a bad morning. A kitchen with no system creates a bad restaurant. The difference between a good operator and a great one is not the ability to solve problems, it is the ability to build the conditions where fewer problems occur in the first place.

With all the hype around Miami and Coconut Grove specifically, I’m not seeing a lot of conversation around commercial real estate in the grove (guess not as splashy as the $100M Sergey Brin & Larry Page mansion deals) but I’m excited for the office market to further mature in coconut grove. Theres a less than 3% vacancy rate in the market and we need more space
