I hate qualifying arguments like this, but - everyone knows I am about as pro-Ukraine/anti-Russian as it gets. That regularly leads to friction between me and other Republicans, even ones who otherwise align 99%. With that said, whining from Europeans and the American left about America buying $1B in diesel fuel from Russia is so out of touch with reality. The EU has spent over $200B on Russian fuel and is on-track to buy hundreds of billions more. You're measuring the cost of this war in terms of national productivity, human capital and economic opportunity. But why are we assuming those are the metrics the people controlling these countries care about? If the economy already fails to provide meaningful opportunities for large portions of the population, and political power and wealth are concentrated among a relatively small ruling class, the destruction of human capital doesn't necessarily translate into an equivalent loss of political power. In fact, the war can strengthen certain interests through military contracts, resource redistribution, political consolidation and the suppression of dissent. Your final sentence is the important one. Wars end when the costs threaten regime survival. But what if we're fundamentally misunderstanding what constitutes a cost to these regimes? A million casualties might be an unimaginable political catastrophe in America. In Russia, the government may be capable of absorbing those losses while the institutions and individuals sustaining the war continue to benefit. So the question isn't whether Russia can afford this war economically. It's whether the people with the power to stop it have more to lose from ending it than continuing it. And if that's true, what does that tell us about the likelihood of this war ending through attrition alone?
