Osmantic founder @TheAhmadOsman demos a hack-and-slash game his local agent built end-to-end on the RTX Spark without ever touching the internet: "We have this thing called Portal. It’s our agent. The code name for it was Cairo because I come from Cairo, Egypt. It starts with hello, then, can you make me a hack and slash dungeon crawler style game for Lord of the Rings." "This was built fully locally. Can you imagine that? You can pick up arrows, you can pick up health, you level up." "This was built end-to-end locally. Something like this a year ago wasn’t possible, but now it just works." @OsmanticAI

Osmantic founder @TheAhmadOsman calls local AI "civilizational infrastructure" and explains why people are turning to it over fears of another Fable 5 incident: "This is civilizational infrastructure. The fact that some cloud companies think that they can gatekeep it is something that we shouldn’t be okay with." "People abroad, but also people even here that are worried about something like Fable 5 ever happening again." "The narrative about the cyber attacks, OpenAI agents that went out and hacked stuff. That’s a sandboxing issue. Open source AI is not the problem. GLM 5.2 helped Hugging Face protect themselves." "Enterprises that don’t wanna give away their data, and people that are worried about these models they are talking to that can just ban them and stop them from having access." @OsmanticAI

Opensource AI should remain usable, understandable, reproducible, locally deployable, economically viable, and community-governed even if today's dominant labs, foreign labs, hardware vendors, cloud platforms, or open-weight model providers change direction or disappear. If

Vercel COO @jdewitt29 warns that employees vibe-coding internal apps could accidentally expose sensitive data about every coworker: "The level of shadow IT is probably at an all-time high." "Let’s say someone on the people team vibe codes a performance application, and they don’t know to restrict that to just the people team. All of a sudden, everybody at the company can see performance data for every employee." "When folks are connecting to Salesforce, Snowflake, Linear, Slack, they’re getting these long-lived API keys, and that creates a ton of supply chain risk." "Instead, we give you a minimally scoped short-lived token so you can get into just the part that’s required for that specific app or agent, but not the whole wide world." @vercel

Vercel COO @jdewitt29 predicts companies will soon face a new question: Spend $200K on another employee or $200K on AI tokens? "Given token costs, you will start to think about what’s my mix of human capital and token capital, and am I allocating that effectively?" "Am I moving fast enough in places where human capital can be redeployed to far more interesting work? Because you can actually automate a lot more of it if you focus on your best practice from a token perspective." "As many companies are kicking off annual planning right now, that will be a core discussion. Do you want another 200K to employ a person, or would you like 200K for token spend? We’ll see where people wind up." @vercel

Ex-OpenAI researcher Scott Aaronson admits AI one-shotted open problems from his 25-year-old papers, while accelerating the atrophy of his own mathematical skills: “This summer I fed in some of the open problems from my papers 25 years ago, and just boom, boom, boom. It solved them in a one-shot way." "These are problems that probably I could have solved if I had spent enough time, more like 100 hours at the least. But these days I don’t really get contiguous hours to think." "AI accelerates the atrophying of my own skills. If it’s something you could work out in some hours, but GPT can just work it out for you right now, that is very tempting to do, and I often do it." @UTAustin

Ex-OpenAI researcher Scott Aaronson tells mathematicians they can't demand AI companies stop solving their problems: "What I don’t think we get to do is declare, well, the AI companies have to stop doing this, and no one’s allowed to do this. You just have to stop ruining our playground by solving all our problems. That is not our decision to make." "We may have come up with the problems, but once you publish a problem, the whole point is that it is there for anyone in the world to try to solve. Even if they’re a corporation that doesn’t always behave the way you would want them to." "A math problem, once it’s posed, belongs to the whole world." @UTAustin

Ex-OpenAI researcher Scott Aaronson explains how AI is breaking mathematical limits once thought impossible, including a 50-year barrier to multiplying numbers: "A month ago we saw a solution of the Navier-Stokes problem, one of the seven millennium problems. If water were an infinitely divisible substance, just following the laws of classical physics, in finite time some of the water would get accelerated to an infinite speed." "There’s now a way to multiply two n-digit integers in time that is less than n log n, which had stood as a barrier for half a century. Many of us believed that was gonna be the ultimate limit. Now we know it’s not." "There’s a better algorithm for the Fourier transform. Your phone, all your electronics are using it constantly. We just learned that what we thought was the limit is not the limit." @UTAustin

Scott Aaronson says he's never seen anything like this in mathematics, as researchers race to understand OpenAI's breakthroughs, including a problem he posed 20 years ago: "Across the mathematical research world, you have seen people drop what they are doing to understand the solutions to their major open problems that OpenAI just dumped onto GitHub a week ago. I’ve never seen a moment like this in my life in mathematical research." "A question that I posed 20 years ago with Greg Kuperberg, the unitary synthesis problem, was one of the 370 problems that OpenAI announced solutions to. Just yesterday there was a workshop at Columbia already trying to understand this proof." "Instead of just resigning or hiding under a rock somewhere, they are racing to try to understand this stuff." @UTAustin

Ex-OpenAI researcher Scott Aaronson says an asteroid has landed on mathematics, and denial is no longer a viable strategy: "It would be crazy to not be worried right now about the future of the mathematical community. This is an asteroid that has landed on our world. People are in different stages of denial, grief, bargaining, acceptance. But denial is just not going to be a viable strategy." "The model that OpenAI used is something that will plausibly be available to regular subscribers a few months from now." "Almost any paper that you read will contain a little AI statement which explains which parts came from Astra or from Claude. That became part of writing a paper within the last few months, without any fanfare." "Normally you say, it would be interesting to follow up this result, and over the next year people will think about it. Now it’s like, I actually already put that question into Fable, and I just got an answer right now. I still haven’t adjusted to the speed." @UTAustin

FAI @efarrellgregory argues the Bay Area's rationalist worldview on AI is a historical accident that China doesn't share: "I don’t think people in San Francisco appreciate how contingent and how distinct the language they’re using, the expectations they have, is from what’s going on in China." "A lot of American expectations, which end up shaping the behavior of people at labs, perhaps people in government, are highly contingent on different historical things here." "The prevalence of rationalism in the Bay Area, that’s not a given thing. That way of thinking ends up influencing a lot of people at labs, and there’s not that same tradition of rationalism within China." "I don’t think they’re talking too much about paperclip maxing in China. There is a shared vocabulary that is very easy to reference over here that is just not shared in China." @JoinFAI

FAI @efarrellgregory explains why China went all in on open-weight AI models: "They’ve been extremely compute constrained since 2022, which means they can’t do scaling to the same degree that the US can. I think they’re at like 5% of global AI compute, whereas five American hyperscalers have 60%." "I think they’re at like 5% of global AI compute, whereas five American hyperscalers have 60%. There’s a huge differential there." "Once you already have open weight models, you have a culture and practice building up where an open weight model is made available, and it’s subsequently used by an even smaller team to be specially fitted for this company, that company, that usage. That builds up over time." @JoinFAI

FAI @efarrellgregory breaks down China's new AI export controls: “The Chinese Ministry of Commerce put together this long list of a range of different AI technologies, well beyond models, some hardware stuff, some infrastructure stuff. It’s basically a tool that could allow them to halt the export of certain AI technology abroad." "Serving a model on foreign servers, exporting weights, could all count as exports. There’s nothing immediate. It’s in the notice and comment period until mid-November." "The Chinese party has a lot of latitude, in non-public ways, to correct how the models are being used. You’ve seen the cyberspace admin in China issue specific corrections to specific companies for specific actions." "The default is default approval for models. There’s no kind of ban right now. The fact that it’s export controls indicates more of a concern about hosting models abroad, about foreign usage, more so than what they’re doing domestically." @JoinFAI

SITUATION EXPLAINED: We just launched Worldview, a map of where AI’s top thinkers stand on the most important questions. • It covers Nick Bostrom, Paul Christiano, Dario Amodei, Eli Lifland, and more across 3 questions: automated AI research by 2028, a software-only intelligence explosion, and pacing the frontier • It also has an interview where you can find out where you stand and who agrees and disagrees with you • 43% say AI will fully automate frontier AI research by the end of 2028, or lean that way • Roughly 34% think compute bottlenecks won’t substantially slow or cap a software-only intelligence explosion • 40% expect research taste to be automated soon after coding, but taste may be closer to a creative task than a compute problem @theojaffee: "Can an intelligence explosion sustain itself? Can AI really make a better AI, that makes a better AI, that makes a better AI? We don’t know. Anyone who says ‘definitely yes’ or ‘definitely no’ doesn’t actually know."

Abliteration CEO @founderengineer, who strips AI guardrails for a living, defends OpenAI and Anthropic's right to keep their model weights closed: "When you’re spending billions of dollars to create a product, I think you do have some right to reap the financial benefits from it. I’m not one of those people that’s just an idealist. I try to be realistic." "It’s the same way I look at charity. Some people say, oh, Elon Musk should go give all his money to charity, and it’s really up to him. That’s the way I look at their weights." "They spent the money, the research, the time, the energy to create these weights, and if they wanna keep them closed source, keep them closed source. If they wanna keep the access limited, keep the access limited." "I think OpenAI and those companies get a lot of respect for how they pushed the industry forward. I don’t hate those companies. I respect them for it." @abliteration_ai

Abliteration CEO @founderengineer responds to critics calling his guardrail-stripped cyber model a "cyber nuke" that should be illegal: "We have a ton of customers from huge corporations to cyber startups and many of them were complaining about the refusals and access to essentially just be able to do their job." "There was a lot of outsiders, outside of the cyber industry and outside of our customer base, that were worried about it. But for the most part, all of our customers were really excited to have access to these models and to better be able to defend their own products." "They see all the articles about all these AI hacks and they’re just excited to be able to do it on themselves first before someone else, with an open source model or a jailbroken frontier model, does it against them. That was our goal, to proliferate access to defenders worldwide." @abliteration_ai

Abliteration CEO @founderengineer argues no serious hacker will give up just because Claude refuses a request, and Congress shouldn't regulate AI cyber risks without hard evidence: "How determined is your attacker? If you get an attacker that has a billion dollars, there might be nothing you can do. For the most part, I don’t think refusals help at all for bad actors." "I just don’t think they’re gonna say, hey, Claude refused my request, I’m done trying to hack. I don’t see that." "Policymakers, at least in America, are pretty good at keeping their hands off unless the risk is actually real. I don’t know what would really drive them to go into Congress and make regulations if you don’t have the actual hard data to say these hacks are actually happening." "I would hope at least they’re driven by some hard data points and not just hype." @abliteration_ai
