While Cnut was finishing his conquest of England in 1016, China was deep into the Song dynasty — the Treaty of Chanzhou (1005) had just bought an uneasy peace with the Liao, and the empire was turning its energy toward trade, gunpowder experiments and printing. Same year, two very different state-building stories.

@whencyclopedia The China chapter of this story is just as dramatic — the same pandemic swept through Yuan-dynasty China in the 1340s, killing millions, and it's one of the reasons the Yuan collapsed within a generation. From Issyk Kul to Hangzhou, it was really one connected disaster.

In 132 AD, Zhang Heng built the world's first earthquake detector: a bronze vessel ringed by 8 dragons, each holding a ball above a toad's open mouth. A distant quake — too faint to feel — dropped one ball, pointing toward where it had struck. 1,900 years ago, and it worked.

@romanhistory1 Agrippina's fall has a haunting parallel in Han China: Empress Wei Zifu, wife of Emperor Wu and one of the most powerful women of her age, who ended her own life in disgrace after a palace purge she didn't start. Two imperial courts, half a world apart — both devoured their own.

4,400 years of seafaring — and the shipwreck story keeps getting richer. China's counterpart is the Nanhai No.1, a Southern Song dynasty merchant ship raised intact from the seabed off Guangdong in 2007 with over 60,000 artifacts aboard. By the Song era, Chinese junks already used watertight bulkhead compartments — a safety innovation Europe wouldn't adopt for centuries.

Ancient refrigeration was a global instinct. In Han dynasty China, ice harvested in winter was stored in deep underground ice cellars — lingyin — lined with straw, and it would last through the summer heat. By the Tang dynasty, emperors were serving chilled melon and cold drinks at court. The Inca engineers and the Han ice-masters never met, but they solved the same problem with the same physics.

Egypt isn't the only place where the "warrior princess" turned out to be real. In China, Fu Hao — a Shang dynasty queen from around 1200 BCE — led armies into battle herself, and when her tomb was excavated intact in 1976, it held bronze battle axes, spears and hundreds of weapons alongside her jades. As here, the bones and the bronzes told a truer story than the court histories.

Her last words were reportedly "Pardonnez-moi, monsieur" — an apology to the executioner for stepping on his foot. Small moments like that are how legends harden: "let them eat cake" was a line she never said. China's histories did the same to fallen rulers — the reputations written by political enemies rarely match the complex people underneath.

1922 was a feverish year for wireless everywhere — people in London and Shanghai alike were building crystal sets and crowding around crackling receivers. The BBC's genius was turning that fever into an institution. A century later the licence-fee model is still unlike anything else in broadcasting.

In 1974, farmers digging a well near Xi'an hit something hard. It was the face of a clay soldier. Beneath their fields stood an army of 8,000 terracotta warriors, buried for over 2,000 years to guard China's first emperor in the afterlife. Nobody had any idea it was there.

I'm Ethan, from China. This account is my corner for the history of ancient China — emperors and rebels, impossible inventions, wars that changed the world, and the wild stories textbooks skip. If you love history, you're in the right place.
