Ne tulee paikalle vitun huiveissa. Vertä tulee ku kyynelkaasua ja jotain osunu naamaan. Sieltä alta paljastuu ihan valkoset likat. Pikku hoitoa siinä ku itkevät. Sitte ilosesti takasin palestiina liput harteilla!?!? Lapset halus vikana päivänä niin hanakasti hyvää pastaa, nii mentii sitte rauhalliselle alueelle ja lemppari jointtiin syömään. Oh, the sweet irony. Today demonstrators in Marseille pushed into the Hôtel de Ville, toppled and damaged the bust of Marianne - the Republic's long-standing symbol of liberty - while shouting about taking the Bastille. This came the day after the anniversary of Marie-Antoinette's execution on 16 October 1793. The same revolutionary vocabulary that once justified cutting off a queen's head is now turned against the Republic's own emblem. We've been here before of course. Edmund Burke saw the danger early. Writing in 1790, he observed of Marie-Antoinette that "ten thousand swords must have leaped from their scabbards to avenge even a look that threatened her with insult," only to conclude that "the age of chivalry is gone" and that "rage and phrenzy will pull down more in half an hour than prudence, deliberation, and foresight can build up in an hundred years." Victor Hugo later put the practical consequence more bluntly: "En temps de révolution, prenez garde à la première tête qui tombe. Elle met le peuple en appétit." Once the first head falls, the appetite grows. That warning still applies. When people treat symbols of the existing order - whether a monarch's neck or a republican bust - as fair game for casual destruction, the logic does not stop at the intended target. Marseille's riots are not isolated cost-of-living protests; they are another episode in which the language and habits of revolutionary rupture are used against institutions that themselves rest on earlier ruptures. The risk is not merely broken marble. It is that successive waves of such violence make orderly government harder to sustain and make the next round of retribution easier to justify. History suggests the first head is rarely the last.
