Konami’s president just pushed back on the idea that generative AI will reshape game development. Hideki Hayakawa said the technology won’t bring significant change to the market. Entry barriers already dropped with modern engines and UGC, and even if AI improves efficiency, “the most important factors in producing entertaining and innovative video games are people and creators.” He specifically called out the “chemical reaction” that happens when developers from different backgrounds work together. He doesn’t believe that can be easily replaced. It’s a notably grounded take from a major publisher while a lot of the industry is racing the other direction.

After 20 years, Ben Wheele finally released the horror game he started in 2006. Buitopia DVD is built entirely as a real DVD. You move through classic menus and lo-fi video while searching for a birthday present for Jess. The Steam version includes the files so you can burn it and play it on an actual DVD player. Since DVDs can’t save, the game uses passwords instead. Wheele lost the project on an old PC and abandoned it for years before finishing it. It’s out now for $4.99, currently discounted through the 23rd, and the early Steam reviews are all positive.

A free Steam demo for the 1998 Tokyo Lo-Fi psychological suspense adventure Rain98 is now available. The demo runs about three hours and covers the start of the story through the first half of Chapter 2. Players get novel sections, interactions with the heroine Reina Amehara, exploration of rainy 1998 Shibuya, and mini-games. Mamiko Noto has been added as the voice of Kyoko Yose. The full game is expected to run 10–15 hours, and a future update will add the rest of Chapter 2. Three hours from the opening is a longer demo than most indie ADV titles put out. It shows the apartment life and city exploration before the full release.

Alliance Arts canceled the public demo for Drunken Goddess Reflux. The studio said it cannot currently manage the restrictions it planned on posting and streaming gameplay footage. It is also worried that AI tools could copy the demo’s look and gameplay and put out imitations before the full game releases. Instead of a public demo, Alliance Arts will run closed online play sessions for a limited number of people who agree to the streaming rules in advance. The sessions are being organized through the game’s official Discord. A public demo is off the table. The studio is only letting people play it under controlled conditions.

CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski says the Cyberpunk 2077 movie with Paramount will not be a direct adaptation of the game. He told PAP Biznes the studio wants a story in the Cyberpunk world, not a one-to-one translation of the game’s plot. The prior deal with Anonymous Content expired, so CD Projekt is now working with Paramount under a new approach. This follows the same path the company took with Edgerunners, which used Night City for an original story instead of retelling the game. Ruling out a straight adaptation early gives the studio room to expand the universe rather than recreate V’s story on screen.

Final Fantasy XIII is almost 18 years old and still has no modern remaster. The original and its two sequels remain available on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, but they are missing from platforms like Switch 2 while Square Enix has remastered or remade most other mainline entries. It was the face of the series for years and the first game in the franchise to get two direct sequels. The art direction, Hamauzu soundtrack, and combat system still hold up, even with the slow opening and long linear stretches that turned some people off. At this point it is the clear outlier in a series that remasters nearly everything else.
