Hot take: the best developer tool you'll adopt this year isn't new. It's the one you finally learn properly. Most of us use 10% of our editor, our debugger and git.

The real superpower isn't knowing many tools. It's knowing which one to reach for in the first 30 seconds of a problem. That only comes from using a few deeply.

Hot take: a well-written shell alias beats a new app 80% of the time. Before installing something, check whether 3 lines in your .zshrc would do the same job.

Tool fatigue is real. Once a quarter, list everything you pay for or installed, mark what you used in the last 30 days, and delete the rest. It's oddly freeing.

Coding agents work best with a strong harness around them: tests to run, a linter to obey, a README that explains the repo. The tool is only as good as the rails you give it.

The best internal tool I ever built was a 50-line script that answered one question the team asked 10 times a day. Small tools with one job win.

Code search, a REPL, and a profiler. If you're not reaching for these weekly, you're probably guessing where you should be measuring.

pytest tip: -x stops at the first failure, --lf reruns only last failures, -k filters by name. Three flags, way faster feedback loop.

Every AI tool now claims "agentic". Ask three questions: 1. Can I see every action it took? 2. Can I stop it mid-task? 3. Does it ask before spending money? If not, it's not ready for real work.

Personal AI assistants and work agents are different tools. One handles restaurant picks and travel ideas. The other needs permissions, logs and an approval step. Don't mix them up.

Question for devs: what's the one tool you'd fight to keep if your company cut the budget tomorrow? Mine is a good terminal + git. Everything else is negotiable.

The difference between a script and a tool: the tool has a dry-run mode. If it touches anything real, add --dry-run first and make live the opt-in.

Common mistake: picking the tool, then finding the problem. Start with the bottleneck in your week, then shop for the tool that removes it.

Observability is a tool you buy before you need it. The day production breaks is the worst day to discover you have no logs.

Agent tools fail in boring ways: expired sessions, rate limits, a modal that loads 3 seconds late. Build retries and state checks in from day one, not after the first 2 AM failure.

Tools that pay for themselves in a week: - a clipboard manager - a snippet expander - a tiling window layout - shell history search Not glamorous. Massive compounding.

Hot take: Makefiles (or justfiles) are underrated documentation. "make test", "make run", "make eval" tell a newcomer more than the README does.

The best debugging tool is still a minimal repro. Strip it down until the bug survives in 20 lines. Half the time you find the fix while shrinking it.

Browser automation tip: when a site keeps breaking your script, stop fixing selectors and probe the page first. Dump every control with its label, then write the driver.
