@hailyelena You do. Lift the car, pull the old filter and drain plug to drain it, oil the new filter's O-ring, screw it on, and thread the plug back in. And then give your little snug, wipe off all your oil mess, lower the car and fill it up with oil, and that's how you do an oil change.
@escaljacks1 It moves heat away from your engine with the radiator, and raises water's boiling point and lowers its freezing point. And also at most parts stores, you can buy a fifty fifty ready to use coolant that saves you from having to mix distilled water with your coolant.
@IamDanielChai First, how is it dead? If nothing powers up, we check the battery. If it runs rough, we plug in a scan tool. A mechanical failure means taking the engine apart. I just worked on one that spun a main bearing because it was half a quart low. $5 worth of oil did about $8k in damage.
@niyjerv It's crucial. Fill to the PSI on your door sticker with your own gauge. Some new cars are tricky. You can tell them that you're inflating the tires and it'll honk the horn at you when the air pressure's right, but I still like to go with a mechanical gauge, double check it.
@Ademolaoq Experience. A chirp means an idler pulley; a knock means engine bearings. A ticking is normal. Most fuel injectors on modern cars are actually pretty loud and that's why you see the engine beauty covers with foam on it to try to make it so you don't hear it as bad.
@N1CKRICH We swap the front and rear tires for longer tire life. Also, most places that you buy your tires will offer you free lifetime tire rotation so it doesn't hurt to go in every five to 6,000 miles and get them rotated.
@ghostwritingcow It's an additive package. Brands like Chevron and Shell add their own cleaners and stabilizers. You can buy additives in a bottle, but you don't have to. As long as you're stopping and buying your gasoline at a major named brand store, you've already got your Techron in it.
@nikii_colee Your car won't run; tow it and drain the tank. But gas in a diesel explodes prematurely. So if you ever do the opposite, gasoline in the diesel, don't even attempt to start it, get it towed, flush it very, very quickly because you do risk serious, very expensive harm.
@pin_to_primer Cars always had electrical systems we fix. EVs still need gear oil changes, and their brakes can seize up from lack of use. So if you break down, you're going to go see your mechanic and you should probably see him before you break down to keep your electric car running.
@happyires9 Ask friends if they trust theirs, or stop by a busy shop. If it's empty or they treat you badly, keep looking. You want a mechanic that you know you can trust who's going to help keep your car running, take care of the service for you and fix it when it unfortunately breaks.
@haydennolson Higher octane is just better at resisting explosions. Turbocharged cars and most German cars need 91 or above, but a Prius's special combustion cycle relies on easy-to-explode gas. So you can actually make your car misfire by putting premium when it doesn't call for it.
@car0o0o0o0oline A yellow wrench just means your car needs maintenance, like an oil change or tire rotation. It's not a problem. But if that light is ever red, especially if it looks like an oil can, you need to get that taken care of very quickly or you may risk some danger.
@thepollpot No. Profit doesn't price in damage. This kind of reminds me of the New Yorker cartoon where there's this dystopian future and all these kids around a bonfire with this guy and he says, "Sure, we destroyed the planet, but before that, we made a lot of money for our shareholders."
@avneetkaurdhami Capitalists don't want competition. It's easier to merge or buy rivals, which is why weaker antitrust rules have shrunk public companies for decades. If the governments aren't there to intervene and create that competition, you're just going to get very big monopolies.
@madrascat Strong regulation needs powerful institutions and a culture able to resist corporate pressure; highly regulated US periods saw strong growth, rising wages and falling inequality. Regulations are often good at making sure the economy is working for us and not for the billionaires.
@squirtstain Fair point. Capitalism gets used loosely and conflated with other terms. We need to be careful which aspect we mean, since wealth disparity, for instance, exists in non-capitalist societies too. We also shouldn't blame all the bad things in the world just on capitalism.
@_attlee@olivernorgrove@K_Niemietz To Marx, profit comes from exploiting workers, so full automation means nothing left to exploit. More frighteningly, if capitalists no longer need our labor, they may no longer need to support our basic needs.
@King_TrueStory Capitalism can let even good people accumulate wealth they didn't completely earn. Billionaires weren't always seen as legitimate. There have been periods in American history where the people just decided we don't want these kind of billionaires anymore and they taxed them.
@TorEkelandPLLC Capitalism has always relied on governments and subsidies when profit alone won't motivate investment, as with 19th-century US railroads. The key question is whose interests those subsidies serve. Are we using them to subsidize and create things that are good for the people?
