The most important technology problem of the next 5 years: Creating a broadly accepted standard for agents to identify themselves to service providers, so that providers can adjust the way they interface with clients (as compared to human-based traffic). In the interim (i.e., for the next 6 months), there will be a cat-and-mouse game that agents will play -- to circumvent detection and maintain their product's utility during this growth phase. However, this will only be a stopgap and it will not be the terminal state of the world.

A few thoughts about Paris, France and the state of the world in general: 1. What happened yesterday is bad, but not as bad as it looks. Yes, they burnt the town hall of another city; yes, they pillaged shops and ruined some people’s lives; but it’s in line with previous protests and still confined to specific (shitty) areas. Basically: “don’t go to the 10th arrondissement and you’ll be fine” is a piece of advice I’d give every day, protest or not. 2. Yes, it’s true, immigration doesn’t work, but it’s not the main problem. It’d be easy to call for mass deportation, but a much simpler, fairer and better solution would be to… enforce the law. Yes, it’s that simple. Put these people in jail for a long time. We should merely remember that jail’s purpose is primarily to remove toxic individuals from society and that it’s OK to throw someone in prison if it’s justified and socially optimal. 3. It’s bigger than that. What’s happening is a collapse of social-democratic regimes. Tocqueville wrote that democracy narrows any inequality down to either corruption or merit. And since it’s pretty hard to admit you’re dumb, people tend to flock to revolts against the system. One way to fight that is strong growth, but there hasn’t been growth for the past 30 years. As a result, we have to deal with an increasingly angry crowd. 4. It’s not only France. France is always pretty loud about these issues, but the same is happening everywhere. You can think it’s exclusively due to immigration, but one simple rebuttal is that this anger is shared by people of various classes and ethnicities across most Western countries. 5. The truth is that our economies are collapsing and have been collapsing for the past 30 years. Up until now, we’ve made up for it with debt. But even that is coming to an end. Individually, this doesn’t mean there is no money to make, but as a group, we’re getting poorer and using as many credit cards as we can to pretend we’re not.

If someone spent an hour pitching you their life’s work, the least you can do is send them a fucking no.

A reminder that Balaji is cut from the same delusional cloth as the rest of Coinbase’s KOL-turned-rugpuller cabal. The same archetype that insisted on content coins and crackhead rugpulls until Base became irrelevant to builders. Some quick thoughts on people asking how I can support crops and be excited about the changes to @farcaster_xyz Farcaster (the app) has always had moderation and a social contract. @dwr talked about moderation from the beginning. Having rules for an app doesn’t inherently conflict with free speech or censorship resistance We don’t allow shitposting on ethresearch. It’s a space for Ethereum research, and moderation helps keep it useful. That’s reasonable. If the mods started banning research about MEV because they personally didn’t think MEV was a problem, that would be a different story. They’d be using their position to suppress ideas within the discussion the forum is supposed to support I’m directionally for apps experimenting with rules and algorithms that make conversations more productive. We already have algorithms deciding what gets attention, based on what keeps us scrolling. I want people trying other approaches @balajis is changing Farcaster’s social contract and making it explicit. That doesn’t automatically make every rule or moderation decision good. Applying new rules to old posts is a fair thing to criticize. People wrote those posts under different expectations, and signing something today doesn’t erase that But Farcaster being built on an open, decentralized protocol matters here. The app’s moderation rules shouldn’t determine whether you can participate in the underlying network. You should be able to use or build another client with different rules and keep your identity, following, and history. That needs to work in practice, too That’s where my support for CROPS comes in. I want the underlying network to remain open and censorship resistant so different communities can exist on it. I don’t need every app on that network to have the same moderation policy, or to accept every kind of post Personally, I like the direction of the new social contract. I’ve always found the Network State and techno-optimism interesting without agreeing with everything involved. I’m interested in a social app that rewards building, teaching, and disagreeing productively I want to write a full post about this, but I’m starting my travels to India.
