Many surreal details. One I enjoy was now-husband’s sympathetic comments on my (private, personal, true) tweets presented in court as evidence of… not sure. But seeing his name knowing we’d meet in two days was a gentle reprieve from an otherwise harrowing experience. You need to know if people close to you will be there when things get hard. I spent my life making things easy for everyone around me, staying small, never giving anyone the opportunity to prove their capacity. When numerous hardships broke me down, the people who depended on my smallness either disappeared or tried to destroy me. It was the most profound betrayal of my life. And yet the people who wanted to know and love the real me came to my side. Not just my husband, but so many of you. This was the first place I ever was just myself, and I was embraced (not by everyone, but that is okay, remember!) and witnessed and welcomed. I grieve the years I thought people-pleasing and shape-shifting would keep me safe. My collapse was far from glamorous. I wasn’t perfect, but didn’t have to be—that was the lesson. What a gift to learn this at any age.
Convinced mine to book a flight after 2 weeks of texting, no calls/video. But when a cop showed up with a restraining order and summons to court in another state (unrelated lol), I called him. He was even better over the phone—I had never felt so at ease! Married a year later.
