we shipped otel support for Claude Platform, and we chose to lean into the GenAI open standard for traces. conventions for agent traces are still taking shape, so @felixfbecker joined the working group to help evolve the standard - im excited to see where the community takes it!
Now in public beta, Claude Platform can send OpenTelemetry traces from the Messages API, Claude Managed Agents, and the Claude SDKs to your observability stack.
Six projects from the last few weeks that caught our attention: A wildfire analysis prototype that maps the fire’s spread over time and tracks hot spots, made with Opus 5.5.

Opus 5.5 fast mode in the Claude Platform is no longer in research preview, and we’ve removed the waitlist! It’s the same Opus 5.5 but up to 2.5x faster, at $8 / $40 per million tokens. It's also available in Microsoft Foundry (Hosted on Azure), with Google Cloud coming soon.

We recently added idle compaction to Claude Code! It now compacts long idle sessions right before the prompt cache expires (~1h). If you come back to it later, it only has to reprocess the summary instead of the entire conversation, which saves you some usage.

We've been working hard on making the Claude Code desktop app great for running lots of sessions side by side. It's now much quicker to start sessions, easier to split work across a few, and you can always see what each of them is doing. Here’s what's new:
😅 To prep some content, I was testing out OTel on a personal Claude API org. I discovered an unused side proj was still making /v1/messages requests. I turned on "full content" mode and then looked in @sentry to see the trace and prompts so I could remember which project.
Spans follow the OpenTelemetry gen_ai conventions. By default they carry metadata like duration, status, token counts, model, and tool names. Switch a destination to "full content" to also export prompts, responses, tool inputs, and tool results.
Understanding what agents do is critical (dare i say, load-bearing?) to shipping agents safely. OTel is a solid industry standard for observability and understanding how your code behaved and now you can get the same visibility for your agents. Checkout the blog! claude.com/resources/arti…
