How to secure API endpoints? An open endpoint is not “internal” , If it can be called, it can be abused. Let's see this practical checklist: 1. Require authentication on every protected route • Verify the token or session • Reject missing or expired credentials • Don’t skip auth because the route is “behind the gateway” 2. Check authorization, not just identity • Confirm the user can perform this action • Enforce resource ownership • A valid token should not let someone access another user’s order by changing the ID 3. Validate input before you do anything • Type, length, format, and required fields • Reject unexpected fields when possible • Don’t pass raw input into queries or downstream calls 4. Use the right HTTP method and status • GET for reads • POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE for writes • 401 for missing auth • 403 for no permission • 429 for rate limits 5. Rate limit sensitive endpoints • Login • OTP • Password reset • Payment • Search and export Different limits for different risk levels. 6. Protect against common attacks • Parameterized queries for SQL • Output encoding for anything rendered • File type and size checks on uploads • CSRF protection on cookie-based sessions 7. Don’t leak data in errors • No stack traces in production • No “user exists” vs “user does not exist” on login if you can avoid it • Generic errors for auth failures 8. Log the request, not the secrets • Request ID • User ID • Endpoint • Status • Latency Skip passwords, tokens, and full payment details. 9. Version and deprecate carefully • Don’t leave old insecure endpoints alive forever • Monitor who still calls them • Shut them down with a plan 10. Test the failure cases • No token • Expired token • Wrong user • Oversized payload • Repeated calls An endpoint is secure when the wrong caller cannot succeed, not when the happy path looks fine. Which of your endpoints would you trust least if a random client found the URL?
