Ever wondered how a blockchain gets everyone to agree on what actually happened? on @injective, every transaction is part of a much bigger system. it's not just about processing transactions quickly. the network also needs to agree on which transactions make it into a block and keep its state consistent. here's how the pieces fit together. ▸ the three layers Injective's architecture can be understood through three core layers: - Application layer: handles the blockchain's logic through modules for things like trading, staking and governance. - Consensus layer: uses Tendermint-based BFT consensus to help validators agree on blocks and transaction order. - Networking layer: uses a peer-to-peer gossip protocol to share blocks and consensus messages between nodes. each layer has its own job, but they work together to keep the chain running. ▸ so, how does consensus work? Injective uses a customized implementation of Tendermint Core's Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus. validators take turns proposing blocks, then participate in three phases: - Propose: a validator proposes a block. - Pre-vote: validators vote on the proposal. - Pre-commit: validators vote again as the process moves toward committing the block. once more than two-thirds of the voting power pre-commits to a block, it can be committed and finalized. the key idea? the network can continue reaching agreement even if up to one-third of the validator power is faulty or malicious, under the protocol's safety assumptions. ▸ why the architecture matters consensus is only one part of the picture. Injective's modular architecture gives different parts of the network specific responsibilities. for example, the exchange module supports onchain trading infrastructure, the oracle module brings external data into onchain applications, and TokenFactory enables fungible token creation. instead of building every core function from scratch, developers can use these existing modules as building blocks for their applications. tbh, this is what makes the architecture worth understanding. speed alone isn't enough for financial infrastructure. the network also needs a reliable way to agree on transactions, execute them and maintain a consistent state. that's where architecture and consensus come together. the architecture defines how the pieces work together, while consensus helps validators agree on what gets committed to the chain.
