This is by no means a recent phenomenon, but I am deeply concerned about my future as a Jew in my own country, Belgium. Throughout history, Jews have repeatedly been treated as foreigners in countries where they had lived long before those who eventually considered them as "foreigners". Jewish communities had existed for over a thousand years in Poland, Yemen and elsewhere. And what remains of them today? Barely a trace. Today, I can no longer tell whether politicians from parties such as the PS, PTB, Ecolo and others make or endorse antisemitic statements out of sheer electoral calculation or because they genuinely believe in what they are saying. What is democracy? Simply the majority + 1. Unfortunately, demographic trends do not favour Jews. And we must be able to say this without being labelled xenophobic: there is a deeply ingrained antisemitism among many of our fellow muslim citizens (cf testimonies among others of Ismaël Saidi). My grandparents, who immigrated from Poland, were Belgian and proud to be so. My grandfather, an Auschwitz survivor, changed his name after the war because he no longer wanted a Polish-sounding name. He arrived in Belgium at the age of six months and graduated as a medical doctor from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, he was een « echte Brusseleir », deeply attached to Belgium, his country. And yet, today, I am afraid. Do we, as Belgian Jews, still have a future here in Europe, in our own countries? Because yes, Belgium is my country. I am increasingly doubtful, and that saddens me profoundly. I am the third generation of Belgian Jewish doctors in my family, and perhaps the last one to live here in Brussels/Belgium. Is er nu werkelijk geen enkele krant of tv-zender die het vertrek van Joodse wetenschappers, intellectuelen en artsen uit België de moeite van het vermelden waard vindt? Dit is al minstens de derde keer dat ik zulke anonieme getuigenissen deel van Joden die hun valiezen pakken of dat ernstig overwegen. Ik herhaal: er is een exodus aan de gang binnen de Joodse gemeenschap, omdat mensen vrezen voor hun eigen leven en dat van hun kinderen. Omdat ze op straat worden uitgescholden en bespuwd. Omdat ze geen keppeltje meer durven dragen, of zich in bepaalde wijken vertonen. Omdat universiteiten worden overgenomen door agressieve activisten en islamisten die hen dwingen om het "zionisme" ritueel te veroordelen. Nobody gives a fuck? En ondertussen maar jeremiëren over een moslima die zich ‘onderdrukt’ voelt omdat haar werkgever haar ocharme vraagt haar hoofddoek af te zetten op de werkvloer. En ondertussen maar naarstig praktijktests uitvoeren die zouden aantonen dat ‘Mohammed’ net iets minder kans maakt op de huurmarkt. Dáár staan de kranten vol van. Het moet hier nogal een hellegat zijn voor moslims, als ze nog steeds in drommen van tienduizenden onze contreien opzoeken om hier te mogen leven. Hebben moskeeën permanente beveiliging nodig? Pakken moslims hier hun biezen omdat de "islamofobie" uit de hand loopt? Natuurlijk niet. Moslims worden juist met fluwelen handschoenen aangepakt in de meeste sectoren. Tijdens hun massale demonstraties voelen zelfs de meest agressieve islamisten zich hier koning te rijk. Niemand legt hen een strobreed in de weg. Als moslims ook maar een fractie zouden meemaken van wat de Joodse gemeenschap nu te verduren krijgt, zou het elke dag op de voorpagina’s staan. Woke activisten, vermomd als academici, zouden het ene na het andere verontwaardigde stuk schrijven over het oprukkende ‘racisme’ en ‘xenofobie’ in onze samenleving. Maar antisemitisme? Tja, die Joden hebben het toch ook een beetje aan zichzelf te danken. En ze zijn eigenlijk ‘wit’, dus kunnen ze niet echt slachtoffer zijn. I can't believe The Free Press (@TheFP) published this atrocious piece denouncing Europe's "war fever": "There is, I suspect, a hunger for existential purpose—for a great war that will return these mediocrities and their peoples to the heights of history and restore the epic dimension to everyday life. Russia and Putin, the ancient foe and the perfect villain, may fulfill this primal need." Yeah, right. I suppose Georgians, Chechens, and Ukrainians were also hankering for "existential purpose" when their countries were invaded by Russia. They were just "looking for a perfect villain", and it turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy. As for Europe at large, nothing could be further from the truth. For well over a decade, Western European elites have shown a profound reluctance to confront Russian aggression. "Europe is utterly unprepared for a war that probably won’t happen in any case." So Europe is supposedly gripped by "war fever," yet somehow remains "utterly unprepared" for war. In reality, Europe is so woefully unprepared precisely because of its chronic blindness to the possibility of war—the very opposite of "war fever." And it is precisely this unpreparedness, coupled with Europe's persistent unwillingness to stand up to Putin's provocations, that risks making war more likely. Putin has every reason to believe that we simply don't have the stomach for a fight. "Constant predictions of war, whether sincere or cynical, may give war a certain inevitability when hard decisions are faced." No. What brings war closer is the persistent insistence that it is just a fantasy of febrile minds, that it could never happen here. If this is true it's a level of evil that's really, really hard to imagine. It's not a good-faith question about how much we should fund Ukraine or what realistic endgame goals are. It's choosing to put innocent civilians in harm's way. I hope there are investigations.
