Inflation rates were so high in 2022 that Doomers didn’t have to use shadowstats to support their argument.
@egr_investor That's an extremely specific goal. I don't understand why an individual investor wouldn't just own a diversified portfolio. Especially when most people building these ladders already have a diverse portfolio and are just diluting their existing asset allocation.

Breaking Bad works better than the Sopranos because the every event pays off and the seasons aren’t repetitive. The Sopranos repeatedly dangles threats (FBI surveillance of Tony) that go nowhere. Each season is Tony dealing with a hothead/idiot in his crew causing problems.
The Sopranos works better than Breaking Bad because individual episodes can stand completely on their own.

TIPS are useless. They go down when interest rates go up (the inflationary scenario they’re designed for) and then they don’t offer the same kind of price pop as normal treasuries when interest rates are declining. It tries to do two jobs at once and does both poorly.
I don't think Jake is harsh enough about long-term TIPS. Some people say the 3% real yield on 30 year TIPS is a “guaranteed” high return. This understates the risks: 1) Inflation is personal, not national. TIPS track CPI, not your spending. And in a taxable account you pay tax

People just don’t get inflation. Millennials assume Boomers had it easy in the 80s because homes were $80k. Well, $20k was a decent salary in the 80s. Similarly, Boomers hear that a kid fresh out of college is making $60k and compare it to their $14k starting salary in 1982.
Why do some people never update their mental framework for estimating how much something will cost? Why are people walking around with prices from 1992 in their brains?
