I think that is great For the biggest purchase of our lives, we should run the numbers first, then factor in the non-financial considerations second Some people want to buy a house because they love renovating. Others for school reasons. Some just because. GREAT! But very, very few people actually run the numbers. (It's currently cheaper to rent than to buy in 100% of the top 50 metro cities in the country.) They don't understand amortization, or opportunity cost, or that renting can sometimes (often) be a superior financial decision. Merely suggesting running the numbers makes people claim I "think owning a house is financially irresponsible" I'm glad your house has worked out for you. I also think that for the biggest purchase of our lives, we should run the numbers, then decide

I'm educated, I want to pay higher taxes to help the poor & middle class, and I support universal healthcare, guaranteed voter rights, eliminating single-family zoning, ending the filibuster, ending ICE and prosecuting its leadership and officers for their illegal actions, no parking minimums, higher minimum wage, gun control, reducing the military budget, massively increasing immigration, ending qualified immunity, a national program to fight white extremism, justice for 1/6, allowing student loans to be discharged in bankruptcy, massively increased housing of all forms, even more expanded funding for IRS, universal childcare, expanded SCOTUS, ending private prisons, and removing housing subsidies including mortgage interest deductions
