I have talked to many - that was my second point and my conclusion was that if there is a cheating issue it’s not specific to research and disqualifying academic lab research from college admissions would be a mistake. That being said, some of the best high schooler research I’ve seen was from garage labs, so totally get that students might be learning the wrong lessons about learning science

Do you have numbers on that or are you going on vibes? Anecdotally I’ve mentored HS students, volunteered as a science fair judge, given guest lectures to research classes… I have only 1 or 2 fakers out of hundreds mostly in Nassau County, NY - which is where many of the best students are
